Our History

How did theater come to the library? Those who remember the McMillan sisters recall that the dream of a theater was part of their vision for our Community's Library.

"The Heiress"

Time: Summer, 1970

Place:The backstage of Mc Millan Library Theater, the corners of the room still fresh with pyramids of construction, dust, and debris

Cast: Two dozen volunteers and Head Librarian Edith Dugean, who gives her stamp of approval for a Community Theater production. The title of the play... "Our Town."

"On Golden Pond"

Fast forward five years...

Time: Fall, 1975

Place: The boardroom of McMillan Library

Cast: Library Director Ray Hernandez and the Board of Directors, who vote to host a Community Theater in the Performing Arts Center

"The Shadow Box"

By 1975, the theater at McMillan Library carried the scent of an unused resource. But within a couple of months, it had become the home of the Community Company of Players. A donation from Irene and Gus Shaurette provided the seed money to get started. Another call came from a teacher at the old Teacher's College on Lincoln Street , offering lighting equipment. Again, volunteers turned up to act, work backstage, and serve on the Board of Directors.

Over the years, the theater evolved, changing its name, buying new technical equipment, and enlarging the stage, each step enriching the company and the community.

"The Quilters"

Looking back across more than 30 years, it's satisfying to see the Wisconsin Rapids Community Theatre thriving and maturing.
