Ellen Roeseler
WRCT Executive Director

Thanks to those of you who responded to the survey included with your season ticket forms. The results show you overwhelmingly get your WRCT information from the newsletter, so I thought it would be a good idea to print the stats here.

Demographically, we are mature adults, with 27% in between 40 and 60 years of age, and 73% over the age of 60. Notice I said “demographically” – theater people are always, eternally, young at heart!

Most of you live in Southern Wood County – a whopping 88%, with 8% in Northern Adams County, 3% in Portage County, and 1% elsewhere. No surprises there, but it would be nice to get some more out of towners in for a nice evening of dinner and theater.

Almost all of you (95%) get your WRCT information from this newsletter, and 66% also read the newspaper for the latest WRCT facts. Thirty-eight percent also listen to the radio, go to the website, or get the WRCT ENews for information, and 18% also get news from friends and family. FYI – if you want to be placed on the WRCT ENews list, send me your email, and I’ll put you on. ENews only comes out if there is something to say – an event coming up or a special need or something you’ve just got to know now. Most of you want to continue receiving the newsletter in the mail, but the few who want to switch to email will be receiving future newsletters in that format.

A special thanks to those of you who took the time to make comments – my favorite part of any survey. There’s not enough room on my half page to list them all, but most of them were favorable, and many could be lumped into two categories – we love comedies and turn up the volume! We hear you, loud and clear, even if you’ve had trouble hearing the actors. Before this season begins, we’re having overhead microphones installed on stage to help with the overall sound problem. There’s a long story behind this, but suffice it to say, we did the best we could acoustically transforming a warehouse into a theater. We hope the mics will help with the problem – please continue to provide feedback on this. As for comedies, well, you’ve got a whole season of them, with the second-most-popular genre – a musical – thrown in for good measure. In the future, you will see some drama, I won’t kid you. But we have to do some drama now and then or there would be mutiny among the actors!

Well, I’m out of space for this time. If you’d like more detail on the survey or would like to see all the results, please write, email, or give me a call.

OUR FALL PRODUCTION:

By Michael Hollinger
Co-directed by Chuck Buchs-Hammonds and Jody Steinke

Performance Dates:
October 16-18; 22-24, 2009
7:30 PM (Sunday afternoon Matinee: 2:00 PM)

From Co-Director, Jody Steinke:
A red herring is a clue that leads you in the wrong direction.

“Red Herring” by the very inventive Michael Hollinger is a fable about marriage. The dictionary tells us that a fable is 1. A short tale to teach a moral; 2. A story not founded in fact; 3. A story about super-natural or extraordinary persons or incidents, legend; 4. To speak falsely, lie; 5. to describe as if actually so; talk about as if true. We like all the definitions, because they suggest a dark, colorful, strange, fairy tale world, one that tells the truth by lying. “Red Herring” shares certain structural elements with both Shakespearian comedies and 1950's musicals, with its leapfrogging scenes that follow three different couples until they all converge at the end. (It may be interesting to note that “Guys and Dolls” is also subtitled “a fable”.)

So plan to see “Red Herring”, a play at its most noir, with actors dishing hardboiled-patter and set and costumes oozing a moody sense of a world that never plays on the level.

“They say crime doesn't pay …”, it would be a crime to miss “Red Herring”.

The WRCT Silver Foxes first theatrical performance!

Thursday, October 29, 2009
WRCT Studio Theatre
1:00 PM
Call the WRCT office at 421-0435 for reservations.

This Halloween production will provide entertainment and fun for all, performers as well as audience members. Anyone and everyone is encouraged to attend. There is no charge for this event, but donations will be appreciated.

The audience will be seated at round tables decorated in a Halloween theme. The WRCT Silver Foxes will entertain with two short (appx. 10 minutes each) humorous Halloween skitsand a dramatic reading from Edgar Allen Poe . Actors will be performing with scripts. At the conclusion of the entertainment, Halloween-type refreshments will be delivered to their tables. An interactive activity with audience participation will be held during refreshment time. After a brief “plug” explaining senior theatre and its benefits to participants and the community with a Q&A time concluding the event. The event should run approximately 1-1/2 hours.

Actors are responsible for scheduling rehearsal times together (practice, but no pressure), deciding on their staging, props, costumes and make-up. They are their own cast and crew … so the speak! And you may even see a few cast members serving refreshments!

This event will take many hands to set-up, decorate, prepare refreshments, serve refreshments, hosts/ushers/greeters, and clean up. At this time we are a small group but would welcome any and all volunteers who may be interested in helping.

The Last Resort - Coming in December
by Mike Barrett, director

"The Last Resort" is the second play we are presenting on our main stage featuring local playwright Michael Edgren.

Mike has taken the Shakespearean play "Twelfth Night" and set it in Canada. Viola has led a life overshadowed by her irresponsible brother and business partner, Tony. Their most important client, rock and roll legend Duke Orsino, refuses to go on tour until the love of his life, Olivia, returns. Olivia hides out in a tiny resort town in Saskatchewan and Tony is nowhere to be found. It is up to Viola, masquerading as her brother masquerading as a fish and wildlife agent, to convince Olivia to return. As Viola struggles to act like a man, Olivia searches her heart for what she really wants. As the plot unfolds, each will learn from the other what she needs to survive. Complementing the themes of love and gender confusion are two fishing guides, a lovesick realtor, and an enchanted jukebox with an incredible knack for playing just the right song at just the right time.

I am extremely excited about this production. We did the play in our unfinished space a couple of years ago, and some lucky folks got to see it in its first draft. I really like the way Mike Edgren writes—it is even funnier now, more up to date, and has all the good things we like in plays; mistaken identities, love, laughs, fish, and explosions. Mike has added some stuff since we last  did the play, and I am so looking forward to finding the talent to cast this gem! I can't wait for you to see it!

We are auditioning Oct 12th and 14th, and the play runs in December.
